Up - Ad Blocker Does the Opposite of What it Claims

popups notifications adware

During our investigation of dubious websites, our researchers came across the "Up - Ad Blocker" browser extension. This extension is marketed as a tool for blocking ads specifically on YouTube and Google.

However, upon closer examination of Up - Ad Blocker, we determined that it actually functions as ad-supported software, commonly known as adware. Instead of eliminating advertisements as advertised, this extension actually displays them.

Adware is software designed to inundate users with unwanted and potentially harmful advertisements. This type of software inserts third-party graphical content, such as pop-ups, coupons, surveys, banners, and overlays, onto visited websites or various interfaces.

These advertisements often promote online scams, dubious software, and even malware. Clicking on these ads may initiate stealthy downloads or installations of unwanted programs.

It's important to note that any genuine content encountered through these ads is likely promoted by scammers seeking illegitimate commissions through affiliate programs.

Ad-supported software may have specific requirements to function properly, such as compatibility with certain browsers or systems or visits to particular websites. However, regardless of whether Up - Ad Blocker displays ads, it remains a threat to both device and user security.

This rogue browser extension is also equipped with data-tracking capabilities. Typically, adware collects browsing and search engine histories, internet cookies, usernames and passwords, personally identifiable information, and financial details. This sensitive data can be exploited or sold for nefarious purposes.

How Can You Keep Your Browser Free or Rogue Extensions and Adware?

To keep your browser free from rogue extensions and adware, follow these proactive measures:

Download from Trusted Sources: Only install browser extensions from reputable sources such as official browser extension stores like the Chrome Web Store, Mozilla Add-ons, or trusted developer websites. Avoid downloading extensions from third-party websites or unverified sources.

Read Reviews and Ratings: Before installing an extension, review user ratings and read reviews to gauge the extension's reliability and performance. Pay attention to any negative feedback or reports of suspicious behavior.

Check Permissions: Review the permissions requested by the extension before installation. Be cautious of extensions that request excessive permissions or permissions unrelated to their functionality, as they may be attempting to access sensitive data without your consent.

Use Security Software: Install and regularly update reputable antivirus and anti-malware software on your device. These programs can help detect and remove rogue extensions and adware from your browser.

Perform Regular Scans: Conduct periodic scans of your device with your security software to detect and remove any malicious software, including rogue extensions and adware.

Be Cautious of Pop-ups and Ads: Avoid clicking on suspicious pop-ups or advertisements, especially those promoting free software or claiming to enhance your browsing experience. These may lead to the inadvertent installation of rogue extensions or adware.
