Wise Search Browser Extension

browser hijacker

Upon examination, we have determined that the Wise Search browser extension functions by hijacking browsers to promote a deceptive search engine. This extension alters the browser settings, compelling users to visit a specific address associated with the promoted fake search engine.

Upon installation of Wise Search, default settings including the search engine, homepage, and new tab page are modified to blpsearch.com. Consequently, when users open the hijacked browser or new tab and conduct a search, they are directed to blpsearch.com. Our investigation confirms that blpsearch.com is indeed a fraudulent search engine.

It is important to note that blpsearch.com does not generate search results; instead, it redirects users to google.com, where they receive search results from the legitimate Google search engine. However, given its association with browser hijacking, blpsearch.com should not be considered trustworthy.

Search engines like blpsearch.com may yield inaccurate or unreliable results, potentially leading users to untrustworthy or malicious websites. Moreover, they may promote malicious content, exposing users to scams, phishing sites, or pages hosting malware or other undesirable software.

Additionally, fake search engines such as blpsearch.com can compromise user privacy and security by collecting browsing data and other information, which could be sold to third parties or exploited in unauthorized ways. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid using fake search engines like blpsearch.com and extensions like Wise Search for the safety and security of your browsing experience.

How Can Fake Search Engines Compromise Your Online Security?

Fake search engines can compromise your online security in several ways:

Phishing and Scams: Fake search engines may display misleading or fake search results that lead users to phishing websites designed to steal login credentials, personal information, or financial details.

Malware Distribution: Some fake search engines may promote links to websites hosting malware or unwanted software. Clicking on these links can lead to malware downloads and compromise the security of your device.

Redirects to Untrusted Websites: Fake search engines often redirect users to untrusted or malicious websites instead of providing genuine search results. These websites may contain harmful content or attempt to exploit vulnerabilities in your browser or system.

Data Collection: Fake search engines may track your search queries, browsing history, and other online activities to gather valuable user data. This data can be used for targeted advertising, sold to third parties, or exploited for malicious purposes.

Compromised Privacy: Using fake search engines exposes your search queries and potentially sensitive information to unauthorized entities. This compromises your privacy and can lead to identity theft or other privacy-related issues.

Browser Hijacking: Some fake search engines, like the one described in the previous example (blpsearch.com), hijack browser settings such as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab page. This manipulation forces users to use the fake search engine and exposes them to its associated risks.

Misleading Search Results: Fake search engines may display misleading search results that appear legitimate but actually lead to deceptive or harmful websites. This can trick users into downloading malicious software or providing personal information.
